I'd never read anything by Neil Gaiman before this, and I mainly picked it up because it retells Norse mythology. I actually got it on audiobook, and the reading by Gaiman was just perfect. It was a sweet, amusing story and I'll probably buy myself a physical copy just to have.

Gaiman draws on Norse mythology to create a tale of a crippled, fatherless boy named Odd. On the surface, Gaiman's tale serves as a compelling bedtime story for school aged children. However, adults will find themes and images that will invade their psyche long after the kids fall asleep.

After Odd loses his father, he exiles himself from his village and soon meets up with a trio of animals who draw him further and further from home and deeper and deeper into a world of danger and opportunity. Soon the story is populated with Norse characters such as Odin, Thor, Loki, and a Frost Giant as well as the beautiful Freya. Gaiman adds to a collection of world myths, legends and folklore that employ these themes: Disadvantaged boys seeking their fortune, the tension between the greens of summer and the snows of winter, the unexpected love that emerges when two disparate cultures clash, the perpetual war between gods and monsters, the battle of the sexes, and the tension between beauty and brute force. At its core, this book explores the tensions and connections between the natural world and the supernatural world--just as any myth, legend or folklore occupies itself.

I came away from this little book equipped with a walking stick, adorned with beautiful images that provide beauty while also offering me stability through life's rocky paths. Thank you, thank you Neil for offering your gifts to the world.

I read this story as an adult and it its really cute and Gaiman is a great storyteller, but it is a childrens book. If I'd read it to my children it would probably have gotten a five star review, but as an adult it gets four starts.

The one thing that really bothers me is the way the women are depicted. I know that it was believed that women during this era was regarded less than men, that they wasn't as important and didn't have much to do with "male" things like running the village, be in charge etc. But the thing is that this is false and that people during the Viking era (and as late as the 18th century) was far more equal (regarding sex, not class obviously) than we are today. Unfortunately this was erased from history by some very influential men during the industrial revolution in the 19th century.

I will probably get a Swedish copy and read this to my 9 and 10 year olds, since they're very interested in Vikings and Asgardians.

This is one of those rare books that would be entertaining and appropriate for anyone of any age.

Už klasika - vynikajúce Gaimanovo rozprávačstvo a nádherné ilustrácie Riddella.
