This is a book I respected rather than enjoyed, it is written very well and has a fine structure but I found no characters I would claim I engaged with and its rural grimness just rather unrelenting. It was a book of more than a little importance, shining a light on some of the most marginalised people in the UK but I don't claim to enjoy it.

I waited quite a while for this book to become available on inter library loan, and for some reason I thought it was a horror novel. Not even close! However, this was still a really good read and well-written, especially for a debut novel (apparently written while getting a PhD in Medieval History).

4.5 stars woah crazy ending

The ombre linocut cover illustration and rolling, rural narrative lull the reader before a shocking and violent climax.
