A small family live on the outskirts of society, in a house they built in amongst a Yorkshire wood. Dark and harrowing, and so beautifully written.

*Audio

There was a lot I liked about this book. I am a sucker for an immersive atmospheric setting and Mozley delivers on that front. Her writing style is lyrical, yes sometimes overly so, but it was almost mesmerizing and pulled me through a plot that really didn’t hold together.  I really liked a lot of the pieces though. The exploration of this unique family and the dynamics between the characters, the struggle between tenant’s rights and the rich, uncaring land owner, Daddy’s boxing acumen and backstory, and the mystery surrounding Cathy.
The ending is overly brutal in description. It’s a jolt from the daze we are put into early on. Intentional maybe but hard to read.

Anyway overall the story is constructed of lot of nice pieces that just didn’t quite gel as much as it could have. I wish I could give it an overall higher rating. Getting the Booker prize is an invitation to extra scrutiny and criticism I guess. For a first novel it deserves a lot of praise.

I would read her work again in a heartbeat. I enjoyed most of the ride.

*After reading several reviews about the way the print is written in dialect I am glad I chose audio. The narrator is wonderful. Recommend listening instead of print.
