A Reckless Memory is the first book in the Oil Knights series. It’s a direct descendent from the Oil Kings and Oil Barrons series’ about the Barron family and their (many) offspring.
This time it’s Ansen. Ansen is Allan’s son and Archer’s brother. Ansen was given money to marry Aggie by Aggies father. The wedding didn’t happen and it’s been 10 years and Aggie wants a little revenge. She finds out Ansen is down on his luck and brings him back with a job offer, though he doesn’t know the job is a general roustabout on her animal rescue farm.
This book challenged a few things for me. Firstly, second chance romance is not usually my jam. It can be boring as and a little ho hum. But Aggie is a different woman to the one Ansen knew (and loved) and Ansen soon learns and appreciates it, whilst encouraging the old Aggie to make an occasional appearance.
Secondly, I had a view of Ansen early on - who does what he did? The guy initially said he could have been happy enough with Aggie - and it gave me douche bag vibes of the highest order.like sure I could be happy with her. (Said in. a douchey kind of voice)… But during the course of this book Ansen becomes a little insightful and is able to name how he felt, and outlines his struggles and feelings about not being worthy given his background. It explains a lot about him and he’s not so douchey but a hell of a dirty talker.
There’s some steam - not too heavy though and suiting these characters which Marie always seems to get right in her books.
Thank you to the author for the complimentary copy to read and review.
Loved it.

This second chance romance was so good!
4⭐️ 1-2 🔥
I adored Aggie with her big heart and even bigger sense of self worth. Ansen grew on me and I loved his journey.
Does money change everything and how do we know when we can trust someone who hurt us before?
This was angsty and the physical chemistry between Aggie and Ansen was great.
The addition and personalities of the rescue animals added charm to the story and the evolving family relationships helped to add depth the the characters.
Thank you to @theauthor.agency for the chance to read.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5/5
Chemistry: 🧪🧪🧪🧪🧪
Plot: 4/5
Series: Oil Knights
Place: Buffalo Gully, Montana & Coal Haven, North Dakota & Crocus Valley, ND
Tropes: Small Town, Second Chance, Runaway Bride, Western, Boss Romance, Animal Rescue
TW: Death of a Parent, Stalking, Toxic Relationship, Grief, Emotional Abuse, Stalking, Gaslighting
Main Characters: Aggie & Ansen
I enjoyed getting to know Aggie and Ansen. I liked being able to see into the last and get to know the motivation behind soany actions and circumstances. I am all for girl power and doing what you think is best for your life.
I loved the integration of the ranches into the stories and how much of an impact they have on people. I was so happy to see so many more scenes regarding the ranches and the families that work them. Growing up on a small farm and ranch only made me miss it more than usual.
The intimate scenes within the story were fantastic. I was glad to see that there wasn't just list within their times together. But an actual time that they were able to appreciate each other.
What I didn't like was how Aggie was upset because her dad wouldn't pay for her college and she threw a bit of a tantrum. Yes, he paid for her brother's to go, she had the means to pay for herself. I get that there is a rift that was caused because of treatment within the family, but being a bit of a princess about not having your college paid for when you can is a bit of a reach.
I received a complimentary copy via the author and Booksprout. All opinions are my own, honest and voluntary.

Aggie, the female lead, was thrilled a decade ago when Ansen, the male lead, wanted to date and then marry her, the unfashionable and unwanted only daughter of a rich man. On her wedding day, she found out her father was paying him and she left him and that life behind, wishing him the worst. Now, a decade later, Ansen’s life has fallen apart and she’s in a position to offer him a job, which he’s not in a position to refuse…
This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a great emotional beginning to a new contemporary series. I haven’t read any of the Oil stories but I am truly enjoying the background family interactions and the care for each other displayed. I enjoyed both lead characters’ personal development prior to their second chance and then during the story. I enjoyed Aggie’s confidence in what she wanted contrasted with Ansen’ uncertainty. I enjoyed their relationship development. I enjoyed the intimate scenes. I enjoyed the animal interactions. I’m very much looking forward to the rest of the series - it looks like it’ll be awesome.

This is a small town second chance romance that has you steadily in your feelings from beginning to end.
Aggie grew up on a ranch with four older brothers. And she was protected and babied by them and treated like stock by her father.
Ansen was a young ranch hand who knew better than to date the bosses daughter. Or does he?
Come their wedding day Aggie has her heart broken and runs, taking his dog with her.
Fast forward ten years. And neither has healed their heart and they reconnect through a job.
The emotions they feel and go through are a lot. And not just he MCs. But a lot of the side characters tug on your heart strings. (Made me want to read their books too)
The journey these characters take to become the people they want to be and the people they need to be for each other is a heart warming journey.
I definitely recommend this book. Especially for a heartfelt, second chance romance.
I received an ARC of this for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review.

Aggie flees town on her wedding day after overhearing that her dad was paying her fiancé to marry her. 10 years later and Aggie’s back, offering Ansen a job because she needs help and he’s out of options. Granted it was a drunken decision…but it worked out well! Even after all this time, these two still have such a connection. There’s quite a bit of pain and distrust to work through, but I really like Aggie and Ansen together. I love Aggie learning how to stand up for herself—can we talk about that phone call with Gussy? 👀 Ansen manages to redeem himself throughout the book and pushes Aggie to go after what she wants, even being willing to go against her brothers for her. I cannot wait for more of the brothers after seeing their protectiveness over Aggie! I enjoyed this one!

“Agatha Christie Knight–”
“I told you not to use my full name.”
“–I happen to love you.”
‘Agatha Knight cannot wait to marry her fiancé, Ansen Barron. That is until, she overhears a conversation between her brother and Ansen regarding how much he is getting paid to marry her. Running away on her wedding day with Tex, Ansen’s dog, Aggie starts a new life doing everything that she has always wanted to do. 10 years have now passed and Ansen has reappeared in Aggie’s life, and it’s clear that there’s still some lingering feelings between the two.’
This is the first book that I have read by Marie and it will definitely not be my last. I was drawn in from the very first chapter and could not put this book down.
I always love a second chance as the emotions and drama are always high and it makes an interesting read.
I am glad that Aggie was a strong FMC and despite how her family treated her growing up, she was able to stand up for herself and didn’t allow herself to be walked over. Her family were big meddlers but towards the end, they realised she was strong and could look after herself.
I adored Ansen’s character. At first I wasn’t sure how to feel about him due to a few of his actions, but when I learned more about his history and background, I understood him better and ended up by loving him. The jealousy he showed, phewww. Jealous with a capital J, as shown in one particular scene that lives in my brain - ‘Dr Jake slid off his stool. “I have a call bright and early. Nice seeing you.” It was nice seeing him go away’.
This book includes:
-Runaway Bride
-Small Town
-Second Chance
-Boss/Employee
-Forced Proximity
-Dual POV
