A pretty bland read, but not terrible. I probably read this when I was a kid.
Newbery winner. This one is short and sweet. And I do mean sweet. Man puts in ad for woman to be his wife and helpmate out west during 1800s. New Englander answers because she feels she should leave her family home now that her brother has decided to marry. (One house and two women) Nice story how the kids grow to like her and she them and their father. Very much New England practical here.
Read this with my book club girls. They are generally in the 8-9 years age group and very bright, very fascinating young ladies. With 1 or 2 exceptions, they loved this book. It generated interesting discussions about family, marriage, home, mothers, fathers, childbirth, animals, hardships, life on the prairie, life by the coast, mail-order brides (which they were pretty weirded out by) and many, many other topics. A lot of life packed into this little book. Not a long read but it took us several days to get through it because we kept stopping along the way to discuss it, which was awesome! Recommend.
Adding this years later so I remember how short and perfect it is -- not a word wasted, not a word out of place. A masterpiece of tone and economy.
This was a very good book. Definitely one that was good for me when we read it in elementary school.
