A young woman with a keen intellect and interest in forensic science meets a string of brutal murders in Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco.

Audrey Rose Wadsworth, despite her social rank, gender, and father's wishes, prefers to study with her uncle and develop her understanding of and skill in forensic medicine instead of attending social teas for gossip. When London begins to experience the terror of a murderer being called Leather Apron in the press, Audrey Rose find herself, her uncle, and another of his students, Thomas Cresswell, investigating the murders to try to find the murderer before he strikes again. As the clues and astute deductions from the frustrating Thomas seem to get closer and closer to home and family, Audrey Rose is faced with some difficult decisions that will have far-reaching repercussions.

The story was entertaining in the way it incorporated familiar, well-researched historical facts and elements and molded them through lots of description to better fit the narrative, as well as refreshing with a strong, determined, and opinionated female lead. Having read the second book in this series first, I had insight into who Jack the Ripper was, but even with that knowledge, the writing allowed for some misdirection and twists along the way to cast some doubts on what I knew. The dynamic and witty repartee between Audrey Rose and Thomas provided some much needed humor to balance out the morbid depictions of the state and dissection of cadavers.

Overall, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Ahhhh to have someone like Thomas Creswell 😍 not only is he described to be extremely attractive but I love his intelligence and the banter him and Audrey Rose has. Now I absolutely have to read Hunting Prince Dracula. Kerri Maniscalco can’t miss.
