It wasn't bad, but I had to force myself to keep going. It got predictable, and even with the twist at the end, it wasn't surprising.

I really liked the use of actual events and timelines, as well as historical depictions of relevant pictures at the chapter title pages. The author makes it clear in her authors note at the end what was factual, modified, or made up which is helpful.
Audrey Rose is a very fascinating character with spirit uncharacteristic for her time and a penchant for forensic science. I wouldn’t recommend this book for the faint of heart (but it is a Jack the Ripper story so that’s expected); it was also not gratuitously gory.
The identity of Jack was well obscured throughout the book. I also enjoyed Audrey Rose and Thomas’ collegiate but sometimes flirty relationship. The ability of both to turn off their emotions in order to perform autopsies and investigations on some particularly gruesome crime scenes makes for interesting an interpersonal relationship between them.
I did not like the “medium” but considering he only occupied about two pages and was based on a real historical figure I’ll give it a pass.
Overall it’s a fun intersection of true crime, historical fiction, and science fiction

I actually really enjoyed this book. My first go around with this author and it kept my attention. I did have prior knowledge of the ripper murders so it may have helped or hindered it. Is it mind blowing, not necessarily. I did pick up on the real culprit relatively early but it was interesting about the motivation to commit the murders. I think if you have the mindset that it is YA then a lot of the cringe moments are understood.
I rate it a 4.75 and will be continuing this series and others by this author.

It was a beautifully written retelling of Jack the Ripper from the POV of a female forensic student... Well the main character is hoping to be a forensic student but due to the time period and her gender it is not seen has a proper profession for a young women. I loved how well the author portrayed the main character, she is a strong female who is also juggling her insecurities. I also enjoyed the banter between her and the guy she is but isn't interested in, it was very entertaining. I highly look forward to reading the rest of the series.
