When people say that they can't write a review that justifies the brilliance of a book I usually roll my eyes. That said, please collective eye roll, because I can't put in words the brilliance of this book.
I knew stories of the Disappeared in Chile; the terror of the Pinochet rule, this was the first book I read that documented that horror. Alejandro is saved by some miracle and sent to live with family in the US. There he meets the Lark family. Eldest child Val, blonde and gorgeous is his frenemy.
Separate tale Javier Soto, beaten, ostracised by his family finds a new way to survive. Meets Alejandro, meets Val.
Every word written is a word well used. Every word full of significance. Flip Trueblood, you are a legend in a porkpie hat, I will think of you always.
The Lark family are resplendent. Javier is complex, delicious and tempting. Alex (Alejandro) I Flove him forever.
This book is worth every penny and more.

This is my first time reading a book by Suanne Laqueur … and I must say, it's amazing beyond words!! I'm not even sure where to begin with this book review. The way she writes , is simply beautiful! She is captivating and gets your attention from the start!! You must read this book NOW! I can't not do it justice by just writing a simple review. Do yourself a favor and add it to your Christmas list ASAP !
This story weaves two different cultures and countries together , from Chile to Manhattan. There's so much depth and emotion in this book. After I finished reading , I just sat there and thought ,”Wow!” Total book hangover right now.
Alex is taken to the States from Chile, when his country falls into military coup.He is alone in the world and all he can think about is his missing parents . Will he ever see them again?? He is taken in by the American family, the Larks. Alex doesn't know one single word of English. But the family is patient and helps him every step of the way.
Javier is a top paid male escort. He is home one day on 9/11 and witnesses New York falls to terrorism. He unexpectedly gets guardianship of his nephew after the attack. He has to change his ways and open his heart to his nephew. He has never been in love nor ever received loved in return. This is all foreign to him!!
Valerie Lark takes a liking to Alex from the get go. Their bond was immediate. Over the years … their bond and connection, only gets stronger.
Alex, Javier and Valerie… their lives are intertwined in their 20’s and again in their 40’s. They each have a deep and rich connection to one another in their own way. Life has a way of putting people in your life the right exact moment you need them! They each need one another at some point during their lives. Their connection and friendships are strong, throughout the years... even during headache and loss. Their love, compassion and friendship always wavers through.
I don't want to give any spoilers, but good grief… this book is just too good to pass up! You must put it on your to be read list as soon as possible!!
Excellent Job, Suanne Laqueur! I now must go buy and read the rest of your other books!! I can't wait to read more from you!!

My last book of 2021 and without a doubt- the very best. Richness of plot, fantastic characters and relationship development. I live family sagas but to later it with intriguing dynamics and soul searing love, well damn. This book with be with me for a long time. I can’t wait to dive into Javier’s story next. He deserves to be loved, and deeply so.
I think this book is good at what it sets out to do. But the prose… It is pleasantly warm and sweet as honey and I’ve read books like these before and none of them were for me. The Valley of Decision, Tell the Wolves I’m Home, The Curse of Chalion…. War flashbacks.
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Animal death

Prompt #5 - Chapters Have Titles
Title: An Exaltation of Larks
Author: Suanne Laqueur
Owned since TNTNYC Oct 2021
Series: Venery - Book 1
I cannot say enough about this book. It hasn't been on my shelf for very long and I'm so glad I own the whole series
This multi-generational story weaves a tale of great depth and texture. It is filled with a rich history, lots of characters, and explores family of origin vs family of choice. It was an emotional read and had a very defined timeline. It was really cool watching the characters grow through the years.
I absolutely 100% recommend this story.

It only took me over a year to have the guts to write something about this book. I felt like such a shitty reader for not even dropping a line saying I LOVED it. And I truly adored this story.
See, a year is more or less the time it took me to get past my unprecedented withdrawal regarding a book.
This author's words are a drug and it took me weeks to let her words truly sink in.
Many times I tried to write a review and in all honesty all I could think about was : WOW.
Such an inadequate manner to describe my experience reading one of the most amazing storyteller.
And yet. Just fucking wow. But you understand surely how poor and lame my attempt at describing the sensitivity, every nuances and subtlety the author created would be. I don't feel like I can make her work justice by exclaiming : WOW! This book!
Or can I?
The amount of work, research, emotions, passion she puts in her stories is just astonishing. I don't claim to know it but you can tell an author is beyond invested in her story when you feel and cherish fictional characters as you would real people you love. It's talent and dedication combined to be able to create such genuine and arresting people. It's unnerving how real they get under Suanne Laqueur's pen.
The feelings and care I have for each every character she creates are to this day unequalled.
We, reviewers, often describe great fleshed-out characters as "complex". But forget complex. Complex is the equivalent of me resuming this book with my pathetic "wow". Try torturous, tormented, overlayed, fascinating, sorrowful but also beautiful, comforting and full of hope.
I could try and relate what An Exaltation of Larks is about, but I won't. It's subtle, it's bold, it's complex, it's real's people story spanning over decades and just as much emotions life can encompass over such a long period of time. It's intricate and real, it's raw and gritty and most of all meaningful.
It's just plain remarkable and I can't urge you enough to try Suanne's work.
Just READ. THE. DAMN. BOOK!

I think this was supposed to be erotic and titillating, but for me it felt flat and boring despite all the convoluted twists and turns in the plot. There were too many things going on plot wise, and too little character development to back it up. For me to care about the heightened drama I need to know more about the character beside their natural good looks. Plus, it seemed like the book was striving for a nitty-gritty realism while undermining it with a whole bunch of strange coincidences.
