If you’re interested in Science Fiction as a genre, but not too big a fan of aliens and outer space, The Island of Doctor Moreau is probably the book for you. It’s fairly short, it makes a good introduction to the genre and it has a fair few twists that’ll help keep you engaged throughout. That being said, if you’re looking for something with in depth world building or complex characters, I think that you should probably look elsewhere.

Ultimately, this book is a pretty good weekend read if you’re looking for a sci-fi book with light horror elements. Pretty much a down the middle 3/5.

An excellent blend of sci-fi and horror. It took me just a little while to get into it, but once it had me in it's claws I couldn't put it down.

A minor classic that charts the final frontier between egotistical and superstitious Judeo-Christian belief and scientific thought. The definition of the word human, since ancient times, has been in opposition to animal--and the Torah and Bible took this tact. The far-reaching effect of Darwin's discovery is that there is no opposition there--which a thinking person can readily see in our behaviors anyway--and this disconcerts the conservative, egotistical mind, which always desires to bask in its exceptionality. Also pricks the conscience that condones vivisection and eats meat--not to mention wages war and tortures its fellow men for "information." Especially surprising here is the mockery made of religion--how Montgomery and Moreau (and Prendick, too, when he claims that the dead Moreau will "rise again")--only use it cynically to keep the "beast men" in line. Take that, C of E! Kudos to Wells for such a pointed sci. fi. allegory. It's also quite exciting and succinctly written--way ahead of its time!

H.G. Wells may be a silly ass, but he's a damn good writer.

I’m a big fan of anything that leans heavily into the body horror and mythological weight of H.P. Lovecraft. However, I’m also not a big fan of anything that leans into the uncomfortably racist undertones of H.P. Lovecraft.
Unfortunately, they often come together, and if you separate the clearly flawed ideology of Moreau and Wells from the story itself, you’ve got a really crisp set of epistle-like writings alongside classics like Dracula and Frankenstein.
