3.56 AVERAGE

I’m a big fan of anything that leans heavily into the body horror and mythological weight of H.P. Lovecraft. However, I’m also not a big fan of anything that leans into the uncomfortably racist undertones of H.P. Lovecraft.
Unfortunately, they often come together, and if you separate the clearly flawed ideology of Moreau and Wells from the story itself, you’ve got a really crisp set of epistle-like writings alongside classics like Dracula and Frankenstein.

I highly recommend this edition for Margaret Atwood’s wonderful introduction.

I found this book to be dark and moody. I can't say that I particularly enjoyed it, but I appreciated the complexity of the story.

I reviewed the Val Kilmer/Marlon Brando movie for the Three Nice Things Podcast and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Listen in so it won't have been in vain.

If you like Frankenstein, you'll love this book.

As promised by the description, this is a "rip-roaring good read" that explores themes around religion, evolution, morality, and humanity as relevant now as when it was written.

Read this because I bought Sylvia Moreno Garcia’s, The Daughter of Dr Moreau, a re-imagining, and wanted to have the background knowledge of the original. I don’t read a lot of sci-fi but it reminded me a lot of Shelley’s Frankenstein with its descriptions of the Beast People and musings on the nature of humanity. A few plot wholes but overall a nice, short interesting story.

Presently, I hated this book!

The last half wasn't half bad, that's why I give it a 2.5 star rating, but the first half was insufferable, the writing repetitive and obnoxious and the story pretty much boring!

Sorry, this was simply not for me!
