Ok so atypical of an underdog story. I liked this one and will be continuing the series. I did get a little frustrated in the middle but it was build up for the end and a great way to leave off the first book. I’m a fan of where this series is going and I even like the how the romantasy was done. The romance wasn’t the entire umbrella. This was fantasy with a romantasy bent and I appreciate that. I’m rooting for Lyr and so happy she finally got to where she knew she needed to be with all the adversity stacked against her.

Strong world building is a big task and Frankie has written and imagined a magnificent one. From the languages to the map and lore, I am so excited to see what is next!! I have my theories and I really really want to see if I am correct!!!!!!!!

I can't really put my finger on why this book didn't work for me.

The MC was annoying. I have no care for a character leading someone on, when they aren't interested, but is also catching feeling for another. Don't be a sh*t person!

The world was not well explained and I am still feeling lost about it.
Things didn't make sense or maybe it was my understanding, but it felt messy and unclear. To the point that I don't even know how to explain it. It's a drowned empire, but really only brushes over this at maybe the 60% mark. There are humans and people with magic. But if you don't have magic, you get kicked out of society. Not sure why this is, when you're allowing humans.
I shouldn't need to treat a book like an assignment to understand it.

This was just a huge flop for me.

In the beginning the book introduces way too many new titles and a lot of weird names.
The Writing style and "name/title dunping" got so confusing, and I lost track soo many times, about who was who and where they were because of all the made-up names. I got about a third into the book and contemplated to dnf about 6 times already. Reading it just made me feel dumb. But I paid for it so I at least wanted to get my money's worth. In the end I am glad I finished reading the book. The last third finally picked up the pace and the mc stared to actually do sth. The End was also kinda motivating.... and I wanna know how the Story progresses. So i'm thinking about reading the second book. But at the same time it was realy difficult to get through and I only liked the last third so I am not too shure.
