Same issue as the last book - 3.5, I love the side characters a lot but can't find myself go care too deeply for Elloren.

i’m enjoying this series for three reasons: 1) i love me an epic, complicated fantasy, 2) i will DEVOUR a love triangle at every possible opportunity, and 3) the stakes triple in severity in this one. I’M LOCKED IN. i must see the Bad Guys lose for my mental health!!!!!

i had a lot more fun with this one than the first one, mostly because we see elloren’s growth start to take off, the relationships between characters start to really take off, and the plot starts to unravel in ways that had my heart rate so elevated for such a sustained period my apple watch yelled at me.

while this is a tough read emotionally with so many painful on-page situations of overt racism, violence, oppression, and suffering for so many characters, it’s one that’s well built for any fantasy lover. it’s worth a read if you’re in the mood for epic fantasy with high stakes and heavy themes and a fun romantic subplot between multiple sets of characters, but make sure you save it for when you’re feeling patient, because things do tend to move a bit slow.

If I could give it more stars, I would. Wow. So happy to have found this series.

Definitely enjoyed this book more than the first. I felt like the first was trying too hard to be something else, while this book felt more like the author was coming into the story she actually wanted to tell (as opposed to ripping off another story). There were still some weak spots, especially near the end, but I'm looking forward to seeing how the series plays out. I hope the books continue to improve!

closer to my thoughts the second time around, but still bumping to an almost perfect read. i think i'm tainted by the fall off over the next few books though orz
