Don Gabo mismo lo dice: "Yo no había vuelto a leer este relato desde hace quince años. Me parece bastante digno para ser publicado, pero no acabo de comprender la utilidad de su publicación. Me deprime la idea de que a los editores no les interese tanto el merito del texto como el nombre con que esta firmado, que muy a mi pesar es el mismo de un escritor de moda. Si ahora se imprime en forma de libro es porque dije si sin pensarlo muy bien, y no soy un hombre con dos palabras."
Es un buen libro. Lamentablemente, el estilo es tan diferente a lo que caracteriza a este señor, que no pude evitar decepcionarme un poco cuando me entere de que prácticamente puso a palabras y pulió el relato hablado de alguien mas.
Esta basado completamente en una historia real, o al menos es el testimonio de un hombre que ya seguro lleva muchos año muerto.
Se lo recomendaría solo a quien le fascinen las historias de náufragos, de mar abierto, y de agonía interminable. También a quien simplemente TIENE que tener cada libro publicado por este gran hombre.

Good story, fascinating insight into a famous author's beginnings, and makes me wonder when merging creativity with reporting became this stink bomb.
This is an odd entry into Garcia Marquez's oeuvre. Presented in the first person of the sailor, and in the Introduction Garcia Marquez admits the sailor, 20 year old Luis Alejandro Velasco, had a way with words. GM interviewed him for about 20 hours to get the story down. Published in a Columbian newspaper in 1955, it was then published in book form in 1970, and translated into English in 1986. So, in effect, GM edited the story, rather than wrote it.
I am not sure how the sailor did not state earlier, with all the press, TV and radio interviews, that there was no storm - the accident was caused by overloading a military ship with commercial goods! And his end of the story humility - that he was no hero, he just survived - is refreshing.
But overall, regardless of who wrote it, it is an exciting adventure story to read. Of course most Western readers will think of Hemingway and Conrad while reading this. But it is a much more direct, less literary, read than the works of either of those authors.
Perhaps for Garcia Marquez completists only - but even though it is not all his, there is something about him in it. And, it is a really good adventure story of survival on the sea for 10 days!

Me gustó mucho la narración y la historia también
I recently picked this up as I had some time to kill and it was seductively slim. It also helped that it relates to my current obsession, the sea. Marquez paints a compelling story and i would have finished last night had sleep not arrested my journey.
Este es el primer libro que leo de Gabriel García Marquez. Lo encontré en la biblioteca de mi casa a las tres de la mañana y como nadie toca esa biblioteca pensé en empezar a leer los libros y descartarlos. Pero este en definitiva tenia que quedarmelo aunque no fue lo mejor que he leído.
Es muy corto pero perfecto para lo que se necesita narrar. Un relato realista de un naufrago que tiene que luchar con diferentes dificultades para sobrevivir. Me encantaría leer más de este autor, la forma de narrar fue muy interesante.

The fact that Marquez says, in his own introduction, that this isn't a book and should never have been published except for the fact that his publisher was muscling him to do so, really lowered my expectations going forward.

Otro libro terminado, y espero q no me maten x lo q voy a decir, pero esperaba más. Garcia Marquez nunca fue uno de mis autores favoritos, y tampoco ayuda q el genero x el cuel es super conocido (realismo magico) tampoco me gusta.
Pero a mi vieja le encanta y creo q me lo hypeo demaciado.
Aun así, la historia esta buena. La desesperación y la soledad estan muy bien abarcadas. Tambien fue lindo leer algo corto y tranqui despues del denso de pigna.
