I've discovered that Poe and his writing style are not at all for me. Reading each of these stories felt like wading through tar.
This is a deliberate DNF, because I was reading a set selection of the stories within this collection for book group. It is not a DNF because I wasn't enjoying the book or don't want to read more in future. If there is one I would say not to bother with, however, it is The Mystery of Marie Roget. It was the longest of the ones I read and by far the most boring too!
3.5 stars*
Short but fun read.
There are 5+ stories here and were rewritten from some of Poe's classic short stories to fit a more modern audience.
I liked all of them, none were scary but all of them were just interesting to read through. There was some random stuff at times but that's understandable when you consider the time period it was written, the original author, and the modernization.
So yeah, simplified, modern versions of some of Poe's shorts, pretty fun!

It's difficult to write an accurate review of Edgar Allan Poe's work -- it's very good, very lyrical, exquisitely haunting, at turns crushingly dull and completely electrifying, with many of the same dark prejudices as his contemporaries. So I will have to nitpick this collection itself. There are some truly bizarre choices at inclusion and placement here. Why included The Mystery of Marie Roget but not The Purloined Letter? Why include some of these stories at all? It is riddled with typographical and transcription errors -- many words are pushed together, words appear hyphenated where they would originally be only done so as line breaks, and the word "eyes" is often written as "eves". All said, however, I am pleased to have read it and even more pleased to have it on my shelf.

I found some of the stories interesting, but they were mostly hit or miss to be honest and I wasn't really a fan of Poe's writing style
