My edition had the short stories "The Fall of the House of Usher", "The Black Cat", "The Masque of the Red Death", "William Wilson" and "The Tell-Tale Heart". Of them, "The Fall of the House of Usher" is my favorite: from the very first sentence you have a deep sense of gloom and darkness, culminating in a chilling ending. "The Masque of Red Death" comes as a close second, mainly for its vibrant and evocative aesthetic.

Poe's writing is deeply atmospheric and compelling, and his short stories work very well. Reading them one after the other takes away a bit of the glow, though, as they start to feel repetitive in their sudden ending twists, so it's better to read the stories once in a while, and enjoy what they each have to offer.

I tried. Really I did. I just think it’s not for me.

A five star author, with five star stories, and yet some are not. This book was too long for me. There were some absolutely amazing stories in there, and then others that were extremely well written, but so mind numbing that I wished I was one of the victims of his better stories.

To conceive the horror of my sensations is, I presume, utterly impossible; yet a curiosity to penetrate the mysteries of these awful regions predominates even over my despair, and will reconcile me to the most hideous aspect of death. ~ Edgar Allan Poe

Re-read for the show The Fall of the House of Usher. Still love it.

"Then we sallied forth into the streets, [...] roaming far and wide until a late hour, seeking, amid the wild lights and shadows of the populous city, that infinity of mental excitement which quiet observation can afford."
