These stories, especially things have gotten worse haven’t withstood the test of time.
Things have gotten worse is on par with any creepy pasta which may have been revolutionary in 2000 but is not worthy of any buzz it’s gotten online recently. I was really engaged in the story at first, and the potential ethical problems that could come from a slave/master relationship but the shocking twist is less shocking for a chronically online person in 2025 and comes off as more of a game of chicken. The last line is not shocking. It’s giving that horrible arg UrbanSpook.
The second story begins much the same but quickly loses steam instead of building tension.Ooo, she’s talking to the people but she’s dead!!! What a twist!!! I thought there would be a connection between the two stories (the kid who crucified his brother) but it was missed.
The last story is once again, giving creepypasta. More of a cautionary tale about how politeness can get you in a bad situation (which is executed better by movie).
All three stories are connected by this theme of being pushed to do something you wouldn’t normally because of arbitrary reasons, and all three run out of steam to rather lackluster conclusions. Also, none of the characters feel like people, they feel like one-note characters. Penpal is a better story than this and you can read it on Reddit.
The prose is good, but the stories are not.
Also, what’s this guy’s beef with cats?

I have no idea how to rate this book. The first part of this book is seriously so bad and I couldn't DNF because I had to try and understand the hype. There's three stories in the book. The first is a solid 1/5 stars, the second was actually pretty good so I'll give it a 3.5/5, and the last was a 2/5. I can't tell if the hype is simply to troll, or if it's like "ignore the first story and we'll talk about the rest".
The first story is annoyingly edge lord, pure shock value but no substance. The relationship is so superficial and hard to believe because of how quickly things escalated. It was gross, which as a horror reader is whatever, but I always roll my eyes when it's done only for shock value. For a story like that to land it either has to be more of a slow burn, or an over the top satire. Instead it was so ridiculous it was laughable.
The second story I actually enjoyed and would have been happy if it was expanded on into a longer novel.
The third story was somewhere in between the two, it had potential but also got a little ridiculous.
