I thought this was paul hollywood fanfic. it was fine! however, the main male lead seems to equally be in love with his sister and his love interest, so thats weird!

Battle Royal is centered around two rival bakers as they compete to create a cake for an upcoming royal wedding, and I ate up every second of it. This book is perfect for fans of rom-coms and The Great British Baking Show.

I loved the enemies-to-lovers trope and grump/sunshine dynamic between Sylvie and Dominic. At first glance, I thought this book was going to be all light and fluff. But don't let the cheesy cover fool you - Lucy Parker surprised me with the amount of depth behind her characters, and she did not shy away from addressing heavier topics including grief and the loss of loved ones.

I will say that the book was slow to start, and it took me a while to get invested in the characters. I also thought there were too many micro-conflicts scattered throughout the book, and would've preferred if the author honed in on one or two conflicts instead.

But overall, I still enjoyed this book a lot and will definitely be checking out Parker's other works!

Thank you NetGalley and Avon for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Battle Royal by Lucy Parker will be released on August 17th, 2021.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this advanced eARC for an honest review.

I didn’t like this one.

There were too many subplots going on that I think took away from the main plot.

Sylvie and Jack
Dominic and Pen
Jessie and Patrick
Rosie and Johnny
The Royal cake competition
The Operation Cake show
Sylvie and Dominic

This focused way too much on the baking show which brought nothing to the story. I also think a more entertaining story would have been forcing Sylvie and Dominic to design the royal cake together, forcing them in proximity, which is how they end up together.

The writing style didn’t work for me either. There were too many references to British pop culture that I had no clue about since I’m not from England.

Not sure why I finished it. Didn't like the writing style.

Solid 3/5.

This book both has wayyyy too many plot points but was boring at the same time? The author could have benefitted from picking less eggs for her basket and also could have shaved off at least 50 pages of unnecessary chatter. I couldn’t wait for each chapter to just get to over with, but that was basically with each chapter lol.

I found this book/author hard to read. I was just bored. It's a long book and nothing exciting happens.

Now my second favorite book named Battle Royale! This one is very cute and fun and light. A little treacly, perhaps, but that seems appropriate given the plot.

Delightful, adorable, and a of course a little predictable. Parker drops lots of little hints throughout the book.
