It's hard to rate a book that wasn't meant for you, you know? That being said, I'm not sure that I would have particularly enjoyed this book when I was the age it's targeted towards.

While there were moments of clarity and life lessons, the plot felt like one disaster after another. One aspect of children's media that I don't enjoy (and have never enjoyed even as a child) is the portrayal of adults as bumbling idiots who make decisions that aren't realistic.

Another aspect of this book that was extremely annoying was the overuse of similes. Some made sense, but most of them felt like the author grabbed a few words out of a hat and jumbled them together into something that was not even intelligible.

I know my son read and enjoyed this book and I think that's what matters. However, I won't be suggesting it as a first choice for kids that need to read a book award nominee this year.

Thank you to netgalley for the advanced e-arc!

Ben Yokoyama and the Cookie of Doom was such a wonderful middle-grade read! I loved reading about Ben's adventures as he attempts to work through his bucket list of dreams after reading a fortune-cookie he takes literally. So many pieces of this short book brought me joy, including the love and support of Ben's parents. & I loved reading a Japanese American main character, illustrated by a Japanese American artist! Looking forward to sharing this story & the fantastic illustrations with the young ones in my family!

This was a cute, short book that is a great read for Grades 4-5. It features 8-year-old Ben, who gets a fortune cookie. This tells him to live each day as if it was his last. Ben immediately is concerned and makes a list of what he would do if it was his last day on Earth. He enlists his parents, his friends, and his neighbors to help him get through this list.

He has some successess and some failures. The book is well written and very humerous. I genuinely enjoyed reading this and I think younger readers will as well. I also loved that the author/illustrator team is a husband/wife team and the author reads the audioboook himself.

I had to read this as it's part of a primary school book club I'm running with my students at the school where I teach. The story is easy to read with a good message. There's a decent amount of comedy without it just being silly. Would recommend it for kids of a high reading level aged 8-12.

Misadventures ensue for Ben when he gets a fortune cookie that tells him to “live each day as if it were his last.” Now Ben is worried that today could be his last day alive and he wants to make it count. Mistakes, apologies, daring choices make for a fun filled Saturday for Ben, his family, and his neighbors.
