A Death at the Party

Amy Stuart

3.49 AVERAGE

This book starts out with a dead body and known killer. What you don’t know is the name of the victim and why they are lying dead on the basement floor while guests are partying in the garden above. Taking place over the course of a single day, you would think the book progresses quickly. That’s not the case. This is a S L O W build and you’re forced to accompany the main character on a seemingly endless string of errands. There’s lots to like about this book and the final 30 pages deliver a solid payoff, but only after you’ve lived through a day of boring chores.

Gaaaaah! This was by far one of the best thrillers I'v  read in a long ass time! So much so, I cancelled plans I had so I could finish it in one sitting 🤭.

Things I loved:

✔ Canadian Author 🇨🇦
✔ Unreliable(ish?!) narrator (Not in its entirety which made this type of perspective unique. "Something" happens to her and we learn that after this "something" she lives with such anxiety and mental distress that you wonder about the accuracy or honesty of her thoughts and actions, and so does she)!
✔ Fierce Mama plot
✔ Huge family dramas and secrets on secrets
✔ Small town syndrome (everyone knows everyone's biz. But do they really...?!?)
✔ Total suss characters - everyone -  literally, everyone, is questionable in their motives and actions
✔ Sketchy pasts and connections between some of the characters
✔ Twist was unpredictable! There were a few misleading drops that totally fooled me and I loved being duped JUST when I thought I had it in the bag. Kept me hooked!
✔ We live through a single day with the characters (and boy, what a day)

Things I didnt:
🚫 Protagonist had some supremely annoying moments and some of her husband's reactions (or lack thereof) enduced a few audible "seriously?!?"'s out of me. But otherwise, this was thriller gold!
