"... I would welcome lovers to sit on my grave one day, and I would gladly lie with the restless dead if it meant the living could be in peace."

This is a historical fiction novel set during World War I about a woman who works at a book bindery.

" If she were more perfect, she would be less interesting."

I really enjoyed this story! I love that the main character, Peggy, had an occupation that is not written about very often and that the author included a lot of really cool information about being a book binder. Being a war story, this book is also very heart-wrenching. I also found it really fascinating that the story was about twins, I have sisters who are twins, and it's always fun to read a story about that special bond!

This story does have a really sweet romance subplot with a few closed door ❤️ scenes.

" The words used to describe us define our value to society and determine our capacity to contribute. They also.. tell others how to feel about us, how to judge us."

I did listen to the audible edition of this one, and I absolutely loved the narrator. I think it gave a whole new depth to the story that I might not have had if I had read it to myself!

This book was a slow burn for the plot. I didn't care about the story or the characters until page 236! So hang in there, it will happen. Once I reached that point it was hard to put the book down.

I have so many feelings about this book. The relationship between the 2 sisters is touching and frustrating. Their world is very small. Sometimes the story feels too modern for the time period but I tried to remember it wasn't a story about the elite class of the time so the same societal manners/rules may not have applied. How characters did not end up pregnant was a little beyond reality. There was a lot this book was trying to grapple with and make you care about. Sometimes it hit right, sometimes it didn't.
slow-paced

If I hated the first one. Why did I start the second one? At first it gripped me, but then it was just a loooong dragged out story which nothing much happen

Beautiful story about women during the second World War. Enjoyed it, but the pacing was a bit too slow sometimes, though that was also kind of relaxed.
