While I've heard good things about the end of this book. The begging was just to slow and I had no feelings towards this book. I did try to return to it as it is a book club read with some good reviews but it was starting to send me into a reading slump. May be worth the read for others but I just couldn't feel a connection to it.

I can’t tell if I struggled with the theme and writing of the book itself or if the book was partially a victim of circumstances and poor timing in my life (I.e. busy life, work stuff, kid stuff). Unfortunately, I literally had to drag myself into this book each time I went to read it up until the last ten chapters or so. I am not one to give up on books (they must be terribly horribly bad for me to quit) so I still finished, but it took forever, it felt like work, it was unenthusiastic, and I felt the ending was lacking in every possible way for climactic delivery. I had a hard time liking the characters though I’m not sure this one was the fault of the author- I think I just have biases that are my own for people who make choices and then throw pity parties about them and act like victims. There was much I probably could have enjoyed about this book at a different time perhaps, but even then I’m not sure. I still give it three stars for originality, clarity and storyline overall. But I can’t imagine a more boring read.

Unfortunately, while I didn’t actively dislike it, this book just fell a bit flat for me. I can definitely see the vision and I felt the pull of the themes - class struggles, women’s rights, education, war, loss - but nothing felt 100% “there”. I honestly felt like the love story was inconsequential and would have liked if the author focused more on the women’s relationships/friendships with one another as to me this held more appeal and relevance. I do kind of see the value the love story brings to the narrative but there were probably other ways to achieve the intended point without centring it around romance.
