I found it really hard to follow the story in this book. The continuity was really confusing so DNF.

I initially decided to read this book as it was the companion novel to The Dictionary of Lost Words (which I absolutely loved!) While I enjoyed this book, I felt it lacking a bit in terms of the plot, and had a lot of similarities to the precursor book - I guess that makes sense as there are crossovers of characters, events and themes though.

The Pros:
⭐️ feminist viewpoint - tasteful and well-executed, not in your face but effectively woven into the narrative.
⭐️ the characters had soul and quirks that make you relate to them and feel for them.
⭐️ I enjoyed the crossover between both books and how there were loose links to characters, plot points and issues explored within the first novel.
⭐️ the author is well-researched and a refreshing voice in modern literature.

The Cons:
🙃 at times, the plot felt dry and lacking in lustre. While it did develop along with the story, I didn't feel the heart-wrenching empathy that I did with the first book.
🙃 while the narrative progressed over a number of years, it felt like not much was moving. In a way I think this was clever as it highlights the character's fixed situation throughout the years, but personally I enjoy a bit more action and drama.
