I read an English translation. So cute, much more realistic, and yet a fantasy.
The book was the basis for the Parent Trap movies. You know Hollywood, I am fond of the movies, but I love this book!

My husband and I are going to Germany and I’ve been looking at lists of German books. I saw this story on which the Parent Trap movie was based on the list and picked it up. The book is the story of Lisa and Lottie, who discover at camp that they are twins and then switch places when camp ends, one going to Munich and the other to Vienna, so they can meet the other parent and so they can attempt to bring their parents back together. And it works ! It’s a very sweet middle grade novel.
This is the book upon which The Parent Trap is based. My mother gave it to me, having read Das doppelte Lottchen when she was a little girl, and I loved it as a child, too. I recently bought a replacement copy (it is out of print) on Amazon. I love it- the images of Lisa's pancakes and going to the opera stick in my head.
The story is more sober (it dates from 1949)than the films but it is still a delightful children's book. Kastner's Emil and The Detectives is also lovely.

Lisa and Lottie ruled! I swear my version was called that, not Lottie and Lisa. Maybe I am high. The one problem is that the scheme reunites the separated parents, which always troubles me when I think of wishful children of divorced parents reading it.
