4.5/5 ⭐️

Wait a dang minute….. this is a great story! I’m obsessed with everything about this book and just started the next one! The only reason it isn’t 5 stars is because of all the spelling errors

I got to listen to the audio version of this book and I loved it more than I thought I would.

The narrators truly brought this story to life and had me so focused in on the storyline.

The magic system is so unique and it makes sense at to how it works.

The cliffhanger at the end! I’m just so grateful that I have the arc to book 2 because what do you mean!!??

soren and jane were giving me whiplash in the beginning they very obviously are down bad but simultaneously wanted to kill each other once we hit like 80%
feelings were like officially established and they were both like fuck it might as well try
and i feel like that's been going well for them so far
LOTS of setup! hate that! so excited for daddy dearest to make his big comeback
i want to know if they're gonna have an epic fallout bc if the secrets they're still keeping

Thank you to The Nerd Fam for a gifted eARC of this title!

Secrets have a tendency of pushing their way into the light, whether we want them to or not. Jane is finding that out the hard way. Captured as she watches her adopted village burn, she's being dragged kicking and screaming back to Skull's Row and a fate possibly worse than death - she vowed never to return, though her captors don't know that, and she'll do anything to prevent them from learning her real identity. Her captor, the infamous Soren, will use every trick in his very detailed, very thick book to make her talk - if he can also keep from falling for her in the process. As Jane's secrets are plucked from her like flowers from a petal, nothing will be the same, and nothing will ever be as it seems again.

I've read my fair share of dark romance and love a good scoundrel, false capture, banter-y romance as much as the next person, but this unfortunately was not it for me. I feel like Jane was very much the stereotype "not like the other girls" warrior assassin princess type, but without enough redeeming features to make me like her, and a lot of the tropisms I didn't like with Jane also bled over into Soren and our other supporting characters. I generally do a pretty clumsy job at guessing reveals in books, but was able to guess most of Jane's secrets ahead of time, and though some of them kept the book's pace moving, I increasingly found my mind wandering as the story progressed. I think there are a lot of books that follow the same basic premises as this one - which isn't a bad thing in itself, I love this kind of story and am a "magnificent give me 14 of them right now" kind of person usually, but there wasn't enough that was strong or unique or eye-catching into this book to keep my attention and make me want to finish the duology.

One thing I did really love in this audiobook edition was that, in addition to being a dual POV storytelling, there were a lot of background sounds throughout the chapters which really added a world-setting flair to the scenes. I also liked that each chapter POV was introduced with a little theme song depending on whether Soren or Jane was speaking. The narrators did a great job, and those extra little touches really helped me finish this book.

Y’ALL. I wasn’t ready. I thought I was getting a morally grey mercenary and a reluctant heroine...
But what I actually got?

A savage, feral, obsessions-are-sexy, pirate-magic-fueled ride where I forgot what sleep was and found religion in the form of Soren.

Too horny
