A quick, very satisfying read I found through a Storygraph recommendation. Clearly, this app knows me well by now. ;) It took me a few pages to get into the story. But once I was familiar with the protagonists, I was hooked! I loved the way the artist played with monochrome color palettes and the witty banter in the dialogue. The storyline was simple, but the suspense was real! Definitely going to pick up #2 in the series.

this graphic novel had me cracking up every couple of pages. i’m in love with alastair the ratbag, i’m excited for what i think may be a love triangle, and i’m keen for the next book to see if
pete & rowan hold hands
. there’s twin detective witches, a short redemption arc, and a little bit of gay 🏳️‍🌈

the beginning is a bit clunky, it made me feel like i had picked up a book series in the middle? it all works out, though, and the pacing was perfection.

This was so good! It was Hardy Boys mixed with magic. It has mystery, humor, and drama. I really wasn't expecting the investigators to be
using magic
, or for it to have such an impact on the story, but I loved that aspect of the plot. I'm excited to see how Al, Pete, and Chuck's character arcs develop as the series goes on. In the meantime, I like that the volume ended in a way that allows it to feel complete as a standalone story.

I appreciated the reference to historical events too (this us set in 1969.) Connecting Pete's sexuality to his reaction to the Stonewall Riots was a net touch. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Some of the panels didn’t always seem to flow well but this made me tear up and laugh to myself and read panels aloud to my husband.
