A young girl and her grandmother have zany adventures on a small island one summer. Slow, melancholic, whimsical. Not a lot of plot, just vibes. Definitely about grief and childhood, and stuff, and would reward a closer read but I didn’t have the time for that at the moment.

Somewhat reminded me of the Ice Palace, but much more hopeful.

I love the short vignette format where nothing really happens. My favorite chapter was when she was dictating the book about the worm breaking into two.

My favourite thing about this book was how Jansson managed to capture the feeling of both childhood and old age in such a beautiful way. That nostalgic summer intertwined with silent greif and melancholia; feelings that feel endless, but nevertheless end. I found it very impressive how much Jansson was able to communicate between the lines, she truly made the unsaid a prominent feature in this ‘simple’ story.
