I hadn’t heard of this one until it showed up at my doorstep. I’ve been trying to get more into classics and this short read was the perfect way to! I’m obsessed with these little penguin editions and this is my first one- now I want to collect them all!
Obviously not terribly shocking or surprising ending, but it was a lot of fun to pick up another classic after so long.
If you’re a scardy-cat like me and don’t like horror reads, this one would be perfect to pick up for the spooky season. It has the Halloween vibes, without the scare. And it’s super short! Also a good one for people trying to get more into classics. The writing was a step away from current, but was still fairly easy to understand.

I love Wilkie Collins - Gabriel Betteredge in [b:The Moonstone|6138|The Moonstone|Wilkie Collins|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1403192382l/6138._SY75_.jpg|1044477] is one of my favorite characters ever - and thus I am glad that The Haunted Hotel was not my first Wilkie Collins experience. It was fine, definitely creepy, but really lacked the suspense and especially the humor I've come to expect. Still not angry to have this one on my shelf next to his better (at least, to my mind) efforts.

It was my first Wilkie Collins story and I know that this is not his best work, but I quite enjoyed it. As other people mentioned the last chapters were more compelling, but at the same time I wasn't bored reading up to that point. I'll definitely read more of Wilkie Collins!

I found this book because of my attempt to read more classics this year. This is my first novel of Wilkie Collins.
Despite the subtitle, this is set only partially in Venice, and by modern Venice he means 1870's Venice (when the book was written). For the plot of the book, it could have been set anywhere.
It is Victorian writing, and it feels it, lots of characters, lords and ladies and other titles are throughout the book. It took at least 8 chapters to feel like I was in the actual story, not the story of some random character who was there just to relay part of the story that was actually part of the plot. I feel that this is generally how Victorian writing is so it is to be expected.
I enjoyed the story and the wrap-up/reveal was fitting.

I find myself again enjoying a Wilkie Collins book. My only gripe with this book is that it could have done with a bit more development in some aspects, overall though I found that I could not put this book down.

As always, Wilkie Collins delivers a suspenseful, scary mystery for the reader's pleasure.
This is a wonderful ghost story to read at this time of year!
