Weirdly intriguing book, but a bit slow overall and not as many spooky vibes as I expected
More gothic than horror, this isn't Collins at his best but it's still a sinister little slice of Victorian Gothic that should appeal to fans of The Moonstone and The Woman in White. As always with Collins, there's a nice dramatic (or maybe that should be melodramatic!) flair and some superbly sinister goings on to keep the reader guessing. The settings are very well-realised but the pacing struggles at times, with an exciting opener slowing to a saggy middle before picking up the pace again at the end. Overall however, an enjoyable read.
Novela gótica sencilla y previsible aunque muy bien escrita, logra transportarte a una época y a unos personajes afectados y sufrientes por cosas que ahora parecen ridículas. Buen libro para la época de Halloween y para el que guste de las novelas victorianas.
L'histoire en tant que tel est très bien, quoi qu'assez inégale: certains passages sont vraiment bien, comme lorsqu'on passe la nuit dans l'hôtel hanté avec Agnès, par exemple, mais c'est tellement long, et assez alambiqué, avant que les choses se mettent en place qu'un moment donné, je perdais le fil (et mon intérêt) un peu. Mais bon, même si c'était pas du niveau de "The Woman in White" et que j'ai pas mal deviné le mystère, c'était quand même Wilkie Collins, faque c'était ludique et sympathique.
Après, pour l'édition, on repassera. C'est un éditeur indépendant qui le publie, et vraiment, c'est un fail monumental: il y a une faute dans le prénom de Wilkie Collins (deux L), le design est copié sur Penguin Classics, et le texte n'est pas justifié. Ça gossait quand même.

Beautifully written and with great atmosphere, intriguing and creepy in a great way. A Gothic melodrama with theatrical dialogue. I enjoyed the start and ending of this novel, however I found the middle slightly slow. I liked that is was not just a haunted house, but a mystery with a speculative twist.
Not on the same level as WiW or Moonstone -- more of a brain candy mystery story. Even a bit cheesy at times. But easy/fun read.
Not as great as Collins' other books, but worth the read! The only downside is the ending, which made me absolutely furious, but hey, we can't have everything!
The only acceptable story of a haunted hotel is the Disney classic Tower of Terror, don't @ Me.

Not the best of Wilkie Collin's work. A clever little story about murder, madness and ghosts, it is nonetheless confusing with little impact emotionally. May have been very frightening when it was written, but hasn't aged well.
