Stephen King books are always daunting although I know the stories are usually really good. Listening was probably a good call. This is no exception, wow I was so interested from beginning to end. I liked the pov from Em and Roddy, pretty sick fucks. Didn't realize this was a book 3 but felt no need to read the others to understand. Curious to actually read more.

Holly featured as the lead here but still didn’t feel as rounded as If It Bleeds, hoping Never Flinch helps us really explore Holly more. Probably my least favorite of the Bill Hodges and Holly Gibney series.

I was looking forward to listening to this book because it was read by Justine Lupe. I enjoyed her character in the other Stephen King books and watching Lupe portray her character in the Mr. Mercedes series. I loved the other books in this little series, but this one didn't hit the mark.
I loved Lupe's narration. I didn't care for all the over usage of politics, COVID, the vaccines, masks, and everything that surrounded that time period. If King writes another book to go with this one, I hope he leaves all of that out. I felt like that took a lot away from the main plot. Other than that, I really enjoyed the mystery, gore, and the thrills.

This was a fantastic and suspenseful read. King's author's note at the end contextualizes the inherently political nature of the setting; it's based in 2021 and places itself firmly in the real events that were taking place, with characters reacting in realistic ways and the plot affected by the state of the world at that time. If you're coming to Stephen King hoping for lighthearted, unchallenging escapism, you're in the wrong place.
