It’s King, so the writing is great. I just don’t think I like it more than a lot of his other work. I did not read the other books that keep Holly as a main character.

I was a little leery, as I was not a huge Holly fan. But I really enjoyed this one. The story was great, and King's famous voice in narration came out. Yes, I could have done without the "fracking Holly hope," but it took very little from this one, and I actually enjoyed Holly this time. I couldn't stay away from this one. It had gruesome violence, lots of suspense, and great characters. Loved it!
I was really intrigued by the first scene but it lost its draw after that. The story felt choppy, and I only found myself enjoying certain perspectives. It was hard to follow all of the different characters mentioned, especially those from other books I haven't read. This is my first Steven King novel and I don't feel like it was written for just anyone to pick up, you have to know all about Holly to enjoy the flashbacks. I will add that I didn't realize this was a 3rd book in a series. I don't do well with cannibalism so it's best for me to not finish it.

The theme in this book is about people having a big fear of getting old. Many illnesses attack old people and they try to protect themselves any way they can in the book.
In the author's note, he says that it isn't meant to come off preachy because he believes it's important to make the world feel as real as possible in this story.
I recommend that people read the author's note because I know a lot of people skip them.
I loved that COVID is heavy in this book because other stories shy away from it because "people hate thinking about it". Well, too bad because it's a part of history now.
Plus, it fits perfect with the theme.
