I’ve never head the crack epidemic talked about with such humanity. Ramsey’s writing in When Crack Was King brings the reader both knowledge and empathy. His choice to follow narratives of specific people framed in the context of the historic events that shaped these narratives, is a brilliant method of compelling and educational writing.

Rounding up to five, and only because I can’t help but compare to Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow which was just a little more compelling. But this one is different. It’s party history and part mini biographies. Seeing it through personal experiences gives it a new later worth reading, and I found myself wanting happy endings for all of them, knowing there are millions more for whom a happy ending is an elusive fantasy only.
