A cute, whimsical period fiction about a couple trying to keep their inherited family home by pretending they have children. The romance in the book is love found after marriage so that is unusual, but done really sweetly by the author. The only thing I had a hard time coping with (and almost made me DNF the book if I’m being honest) was that the MMC and FMC literally rented orphans to keep up their story!! Luckily, there was a lot of growth from this decision, but still… at first it was very unsettling. Lol. Overall, it was a cute read to change the pace of my usual books.
Graphic: Child abuse
Minor: Death of parent
More a comedy. Not a lot of romance. A childless couple "borrows" children from an orphanage because the wife has lied and said they have children, so her grandfather let them keep the home she grew up in. In the process they realize they actually have romantic feelings for each other.
Loved the kids, missed the romantic tension.
I have read so many regency romances where the child while the trigger for the coming together of the leads then gets forgotten for the bulk of the story. This is not the case here, which is why this was such a delightful read.
The kids are really adorable, interesting, naughty and enterprising.
What I didn't like is the lack of any romance/steamy moments between the leads. We are just told about how they each loved/liked each other long back in secret. I would have actually loved to read those scenes in the present - especially a love scene, considering we are told that they were virgins and their first few times were awkward. This part was the first kind of telling/not showing :(.
Also, don't understand at all about one character in particular. Remove them and nothing changes whatsoever.
If you can look past certain fancy words that these orphan kids perplexingly use and the fact that not even the leads' parents ever wondered about these mysterious ever-absent kids, you will like it like I did.
Otherwise this is 90% comedy (albeit a good one) and 10% romance.

A sweet and funny story about a couple “borrowing” children for a family event, (bc they are unable to have their own and need heirs), and they all fall in love with each other for a big ole happily ever after.

This made me cry in the best way! The story was predictable but in the way that you want a good period romance novel to be. I was rooting for the characters the whole time. Would I reread? Probably not, but I would recommend this book!
I would read an entire other book just about Rose and George being little scamps as Pershings.
