Once again, I ADORE Hemingway, for a variety of reasons, and I love his writing, BUT I don't always love his stories. I DESPISE the ending of this book. I get why he did it, I understand the premise that it's war, etc., but I still hate it. What I do love is the interaction between characters, and the internal dialogue of soldiers during a way is chilling. The dialogue between Robert Jordan and Maria made me constantly cringe, but it's whatever. I do feel that this was a bit drawn out. It is unlike his other sharp-edged, steely stories where brevity is the goal. But I think some of this may be because of the subject matter, and the fact that he had experienced some of it and he may have wanted readers to be dragged down, sodden under the weight of every movement of the characters. Pilar is amazing, Pablo sucks, Anselmo such a good man, Rafael was comic relief, and Robert Jordan embodied as clipped a personality as you can write. You really should read this, but prepare to do a deep dive.

Magisterial. The simplicity of the writing creates such an appetizing tension that consistently propels the story forward. The flashbacks and side-stories are interspersed perfectly throughout the main plot, giving it the texture it needs. A few times I found that I couldn't put it down.
