My review is for the overall series. Below are my thoughts on each story. I have ranked them in order of enjoyment.

  1. 5/5 ⭐️ Emergency Skin by N.K. Jemisin - A timely and thought provoking read. What if the Trumps, Bezos, and Musks of the world just left and literally went to their own planet?
  2. 4.75/5 ⭐️ Summer Frost by Blake Crouch - Fast paced and terrifying. I am contemplating getting rid of my Alexa.
  3. 4/5 ⭐️ You Have Arrived at Your Destination by Amor Towles - An interesting take on becoming a parent and how choices affect our lives.
  4. 3.75 ⭐️ The Last Conversation - A mind boggling insight to the potential of human cloning.
  5. 3.5/5 ⭐️ Randomize by Andy Weir - An interesting take on the future of computers - quantum computing. It was not my favorite but still a good story line.
  6. 2/5 ⭐️ Ark by Veronica Roth -  While mildly thought provoking, the story lacked depth. I think it would have been better as a fully flushed out novel.

O último conto foi muito chato, mas adorei Pele de Emergência, Arca, Você chegou ao seu destino e A Última Conversa

These were all really great stories. My favorite was The Last Conversation by Paul Tremblay. I loved the way he peppered in hints and references to other sci fi as clues to how the story was going to end. The story was so unsettling and creepy in the most satisfying way. My least favorite was definitely You Have Arrived At Your Destination by Amor Towles. The main character was so unlikeable (not always a bad thing) and selfish that the plot lost all feeling of meaningful impact. **Spoilers** he was completely hands off with the planning of their future kid, put zero thought into what they were doing or the implications and then gets drunk and tries to stumble his was to some sort of moral high ground by listening to the local drunk conspiracy nut. It was kinda a mess with no payoff. The rest of the stories were pretty great

This is a great anthology of science fiction novellas. Each of the six stories within the book focuses on futurism and the ways in which technology might influence the development of human culture, while also exploring the nature of humanity itself.

“Ark” by Veronica Roth - 2.5 stars

Unfortunately, the anthology starts with the worst of the lot. It’s not bad, per se, but it is generic and entirely forgettable. (Much like the author’s “Divergent” series).

“Summer Frost” by Blake Crouch - 5 stars

What happens when a video game character becomes sentient? Especially if that character was an NPC who is only designed to be murdered in the game’s prologue? Excellent character work and dialogue.

“Emergency Skin” by N.K. Jemisin - 4 stars

Another interesting storytelling choice from the queen of second person narration. An AI narrates instructions to an unseen protagonist, leaving necessary information available only through inference. Slightly preachy concept, but great writing makes up for it.

“You Have Arrived at your Destination” by Amor Towles - 5 stars

What if you could choose not only the sex and IQ of your future children, but also their entire path through life? A new fertility clinic finds out. Reminiscent of Stephen King’s style, and I mean that in the best way.

“The Last Conversation” by Paul Tremblay - 5 stars

Horror meets science fiction meets mystery in this story. The narrator wakes up in a sealed room with only one physician who can speak to them. What’s going on? Do you even want to know? (Answer: no, you don’t)

“Randomize” by Andy Weir - 4 stars

Quantum computing meets Vegas in this tale about Keno and random number generators. Short but entertaining.

Pretty bad honestly. It's okay that stories are depressing - there's always been a large subsection of science fiction about warnings of troublesome futures. But....these were largely heavy handed and ham-fisted, without introducing too much new. The last story, "You Have Arrived At Your Destination" was a little better in that regard, with a tiny bit new spin on something. But, otherwise...
