The first half felt slow but the end was incredible. The last 5 pages had my jaw on the floor.

Ok, finally this book series is pulling me in. In fact, it's pulling me in so quickly that I want all the books and know the storyline this very instance.

In retrospect, the first book was almost like a prelude to the actual story, the actual meat. It set up all the characters and their traits/ambitions, the relationships between characters, the underlying threat of evil, and foreshadowing of events. It was an unusual introduction to a series that no longer has anything to do with a competition for the King's Champion. However, I believe in many ways the first installment was an essential piece.

That being said, this book truly launched the readers into what we will continuously see and follow throughout the rest of the story. Decisions were made and choices were set into motion. After this book, I care more about the well-being of Maas' characters. I am more intrigued with their future: something that the first book failed to do.

My favorite perspective, out of all the characters, is the King of Adarlan. I understand that he's no Caleana, but I find it interesting to be exposed to his point-of-view. In some instances, he seems almost human, even if the story alluded and described his ulterior motives for the realm. I'm dying to understand the evil within him and his thought process about conquering the whole kingdom. Aren't you also curious?
Also, the readers finally saw what Caleana is capable of. Throne of Glass muffled that a bit, but now we all have an idea and I suspect it will not end there. I predict that she will continuously grow.

I enjoyed that Maas did not let the love triangle trope control her story and characters. I will say this though, my one complaint, it seemed like there were numerous scenes (in a non-Caleana perspective) where Chaol or Dorian just "happens" to see something. It seemed too coincidental for me, almost like a soap opera where everything is revealed by snooping around or following someone else at a precise, unlikely time.

Yet, this is me nit-picking. Here I come Heir of Fire!

!!SPOILER!!

Holy shieeeet
