Reading reviews probably soured me but there was a twisting of characterization, random stuff happening, attempts at putting in moral themes and life lessons every page, and read like a bad fanfic. Albus and Acorpio were in love and they call it friends, ugh.

First of all let me just say that if this book was anything other than a Harry Potter story my rating would be lower... As it is, considering I absolutely love this series, I ended up liking this story even if, let's face it, it's a mediocre one at best...

I know it's a script, but even so, everything in this story feels rushed and underdeveloped. The characters have no depth or much of a development even if we already know most of them. And that says a lot...
The plot is a huge mess and even if I appreciated the humorous tone of the writing style, still, that alone couldn't save the whole thing.

Like I said, I mostly enjoyed this book but it wasn't anything like the rest of the series in any aspect. I'm not feeling exactly disappointed, but then again I didn't have many expectations to begin with. I was sceptical towards this new book and rightfully so... It doesn't remind the rest of the books in any way.
Maybe I should blame the script form, maybe the fact that it's not written by J.K. Rowling, I don't know, all I know is that I couldn't feel the magic, not like before...

Well here we are, me rating a Harry Potter book 2/5*. Me, the girl with a Harry Potter Tattoo. Me, the girl whose identity is wrapped up in being a Hufflepuff. There were so many things I did not like about this play. Number one being that it was so predictable that it was comical. I was not surprised by any event that took place the entire novel. In fact, it was all so infuriating to me that I couldn't believe they had the nerve to write it. The plot is overall boring and predictable, each "twist" you could see coming from 10 years away. Albus and Scorpius going back in time isn't a good idea? WHO KNEW. Even those boys knew, Albus being completely blinded by his dislike of his dad enough to go BACK IN TIME and alter the universe makes literally no sense. All of the characters didn't feel genuine, like I didn't even recognize Harry, Ginny, and Hermione. And my poor Ronald, he was a caricature of himself. His personality in this play aligned with the portrayal of him in the films rather than in the books. They write him as an unnecessary character, he adds nothing except for being a "familiar" name. Draco is someone you come to tolerate in the play, hardcore Draco fans will enjoy him in this.

Scorpius and Albus's relationship read to me like queer bating. They love each other so much and feel comfortable talking about that. I wanted the end to be a confession of love rather than some scene with Albus and Harry. Scorpius is who saved the entire play for me, he is written so adorably and likable it's hard to remember he's Draco's son. Albus is kind of a little shit. I didn't care for him and he was interesting to me. I felt like his attraction to Delphi was forced and that he had little redeeming qualities about him.

There was so many small details throughout the whole play that make me infuriated. The painting of Dumbledore and Harry's conversations were weird and had some sort of agenda. The conversation where Dumbledore talks about how much he cared for Harry was out of place and unlike him. The moment where he talks about all of those around him always getting hurt because of him was a little much. It felt like they were trying to redeem Dumbledore's manipulation in some way. The suggestion of the ingredients for polyjuice potion at Bathilda Bagshot's house to turn into Voldemort filled me with rage. We all know polyjuice potion takes a month to brew, like COME ON. Small details like this just fucked me up.

It is clear you need to see this as a play in order to truly enjoy it. It is clear they released the script as a money hungry grab. I am beyond disappointed.

This review is my own opinion, if you don't like it that's fine.

3 stars for the story alone.

This is glorified fanfiction plan and simple. I know because I used to write and read a lot of them as a teenager.

So story was this was pretty good, it managed to pull you back into the 90's and into that Harry Potter world. But if you want to look at this as cannon, as book 8 of the HP series. No not even close.

I found myself rolling my eyes and making odd faces at things characters said and did that were way way too out of character (OOC) for them. Totally screamed fanfiction.

This is cash grab for the fans of old, trying to reach back a decade to one of the best series of books that got children reading. If nothing else this was a way to make money off ppl who can't fly out of the country and see the play. I'm surprised the soundtrack doesn't come with it.

In my option JKR should not have put her name of this. It should have been treated like the James Potter series that got, at best, a nod from JKR to write it but she's wasn't a part of it. I wish she'd done the same for this book as I wouldn't have wasted my money on it then.

On the originality and capturing the HP vibe I give this a 3. It makes me want a real HP book written by JKR and no one else

As cannon to the HP franchise/series I give it one star. ⭐️
