This is an excellent book. I've owned it for years, and it just fell off a shelf and on to the top of my "to read" list. I read it in 2-3 days. Some amazing passages and wisdom, for young and old. SO glad I read it.

“Mother was wonderful, but what was to be done with Mother? Evidently, she could not go on being wonderful for the rest of her life.” Oh, really? Just watch her!

In this droll, and very smart novel, Vita Sackville-West skewers the conventional wisdom as she, and her doppelgänger Lady Slane, prove that there is life and, miraculously, freedom after widowhood. Doddering , mouldering mourning? No way!

I really love this book. The characterisation of Lady Slane and all the supporting characters is just a joy to read, and very poignant.

It's also refreshingly short, too. My copy is only 169 pages. Not a word is wasted!

Holds up very well - if not even better - on a re-read.

This novel reads like the fictional counterpart to Virginia Woolf's wonderful A Room of One's Own. What would a novel look like if it were about an aging woman whose husband has just died, whose children assume that she doesn't have any particular desires or abilities of her own, and who has definite ideas about how to live the rest of her life? It might look like this lovely, startling thing.

"And calm of mind, all passion spent."
