Nice read to kick off 2024. Collection of light-hearted stuff and fairytales, was a bit dull at moments but I really appreciate his writing style.

Very much Tolkien's world, though not necessarily Middle Earth, but far more easily accessible than his major works. His period wit is more on display here. For dog lovers Farmer Giles will be worth the price of admission. An excellent choice for someone who thinks they don't like Tolkien, or who has been intimidated by the scope of his more famous work.

Although I probably wouldn’t go re-reading these stories, I think they are absolutely great for kids. Would be reading these to any child who will listen.

This was a really fun collection of stories from Tolkien.

Roverandom: I think this is probably my favorite of the book. There’s such quality of life in this one and so much joy. I wish Tolkien could have told it to me like he did his children. It interests me a lot that there’s lots of mention of how Rover also had other adventures. I kept thinking about this being adapted into an animated film, with the unwritten tales as a spinoff tv show.

Farmer Giles: I love a good story of a man fighting a dragon, and this one was no exception. I like that the farmer is not traditional in how he deals with the dragon and giant. Probably my second favorite.

Tom Bombadil: I’ve never been the biggest fan of poetry, but I did enjoy reading these aloud to myself and trying to get the rhythm just right.

Smith: This felt like the most “real” of all the stories. The faerie world bleeding into ours and touching a few in a strong way.

Leaf: I liked this one a lot and the reconciliation of Niggle and his neighbor. This one I can only describe as beautiful.

Fairy Stories: Sometimes it was a little hard to follow, but I was interested nonetheless. I think I would’ve enjoyed this one more if I got to hear it from Tolkien himself. I really liked how he tied it into the Christian story in his epilogue.

A wondrous collection of tales, that embodies varying kinds of Fairy Stories, as thr author would call them, all different in tone and theme.

Especially the poems are worth a mention, from the whimsical, to the serious or the dark. Fantastic.

Lovely collection, for any fan of Fantasy or Tolkien's other words

First book of the year. A wonderful collection of stories.
