An absolute delight to read....I've been wanting to read this book for years and I finally got to it. This is the one that started it all...the basis for the original movie. There are just as many laugh out loud moments in the book, if not more, than there are in the movie. The influence this book had on future entertainment should be an indicator of the genius of it. I was instantly drawn in to the characters and setting and literally could not put the book down waiting for the next hilarious moment to occur. If you are looking for comedy or satire in your next read, give this a try.
I love the TV show but had no clue that the movie in the TV show were based on a book. I definitely highly enjoyed this book there were a lot of similarities to the TV show, however there are many differences which I think made this book even better.
I loved it.
If you enjoyed the show, you should enjoy this novel. It has a similar humour with jokes or situations that fans will find familiar. But there are plenty of differences or new situations that it doesn't get boring or seem to be the same.
The characters are just as crazy with their shenanigans, but there back stories are slightly different which ads a spin to it, with plenty of characters you'll recognise, along with a cast of characters who are new, but wonderful to experience.
As this came first it was brilliant to be able to experience where it all came from. And I would highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoyed the film or show. I know I did.

Although the story and characters are totally familiar because of the Robert Altman movie version and the endless TV show - which outlasted the Korean War itself - the book is not dated and is still pleasantly amusing. Don't be put off because your brain is MASH drenched. Give it a try. It's a pleasant diversion. The anti-war message is there alongside the appreciation for the troops who served.

Contains language and derogatory terms that may put some people off, but if that can be tolerated, it's a funny book. Be prepared to cringe at the language, though.
Read it!
Excellent book! After starting the TV series on Netflix, I had to get the book. It's amazing what our people did to mentally survive the wars we have fought in.

Hawkeye, Duke, Trapper John, Hot Lips Houlihan, Frank Burns, Radar O’Reilly—we know them best from the long-running, much-loved M*A*S*H television show. But these characters first appeared in the pages of a novel by Richard Hooker in 1969. Pranks, jokes, minor rebellions, and martinis abound as the doctors of this Korean War Mobile Army Surgical Hospital cope with meatball surgeries on young soldiers who arrive via helicopter fresh from the front lines. The book features a few of the more risqué escapades that didn’t make it to film or TV, the least of which features Trapper John signing autographs as Jesus. Robert Altman’s 1970 film is a masterpiece of comic dialogue and situation comedy that paved the way for the M*A*S*H television series (the actor who played Radar in the movie reprised the same role for TV). Whether fixing football games, mixing martinis, or generally raising hell, the surgeons of the 4077th M*A*S*H are irreverent, disarming, and heartwarming on page and on screen.
A bit of a disappointment. If it weren't for the sentiment over the TV show, I might have not even finished the book. The pages don't fly by very easily, there is no real story/character development, and the ending is rather dull.
I couldn't reach the book I was already reading, so I pried this one out of the recently constructed Wall O' Paperbacks and found myself happily zipping through.
I HAVE READ A BOOK. LOOK AT HOW ACCOMPLISHED THIS WORKING MOTHER IS.
There has always been a soft spot in my heart for the 4077th (and, really anything involving eccentric, yet competent, ensembles). The book is as charming as the show, but with some of your typical awkward 1970s quirks, though it wasn't nearly as sexist as I'd thought. A bit, yes. Some, yes. But not as much as perhaps it could have been. I mean, it was the Korean War. What do you want?
I do wish Duke hadn't used y'all in the singular through the whole book, though. I've spent my whole life believing this was a thing people liked to complain about but that didn't actually happen. Oh well.

Really wanted to love this book and give it an even higher rating, and I wil say it fully delivered. It was fun and interesting to read and compare the source material to what I’ve seen in the TV show, get insight into the characters, etc but guysssss guyssss I could not get past the set-in-the-fifties of it all like take a shot every time they say chink for real :|
