while there’s some pretty substantial differences from the show, the banter feels the same. the farther into the book, the more the characters begin to really take form like how we know them from tv.
some of the wording was a little hard for me to follow. lots of run-on sentences that got kinda convoluted. also had some pretty dated jokes that didn’t land.
i really started to get into this in the later chapters. it had a bit of a slow buildup despite it being episodic-style chapters.

A nice easy read. Makes me want to watch the TV show now

Wow, I really didn't like that. It was so superficial. Each chapter was like it's own little episode about Hawkeye and Trapper pulling mean spirited practical jokes and acting like total jerks. It never really went beyond that. The characters weren't layered or developed and the there was no plot movement. What a letdown.

We discuss this further in a special episode of the All the Books Show podcast: https://soundcloud.com/allthebooks/off-the-books-books-of-war

So, as this was published in 1960 and is about the Korean War, there is sexism, sexual harassment, and racism. I acknowledge those things are unacceptable. There are other books that I have put aside for these reasons, even though they are of their time period.

I have a soft spot for MASH the TV show as my family watched it regularly as I grew up. This book, like the show, demonstrates the reality of war, and the tight relationships that can be made under intense and difficult circumstances. I thought it was well written and really drew the reader in to the atmosphere.

Content warning: sexism, racism, homophobia treated extremely casually

What is very interesting, and poignant about this book is the medical perspective of the war, the handling of trauma, and the connections forged through horror.

Most importantly, I enjoyed the important discussion on 'by the book' and 'what the situation demands, with experience shaped from the foundation of knowledge' rather than the other way around. Paying attention to the little details and using that as part of the bigger picture is a very important lesson that needs to be woven into the medical community outside of war situations as well.

Quick read. It reminded me of "Catch 22"; funny shenanegins going on with a violent war going on in the background.
