This is a children's book geared towards 1st grade students. I read it to preview it for my classroom. It was a delightful story about a pig, her human owners, and her silly neighbors. From a teacher perspective, I like that it had short chapters, only a few sentences per page, appropriate vocabulary (aside from describing Mercy as a porcine wonder), and nice colorful pictures. If you're looking for an early chapter book, or an animal story for your first grader, check it out.
It's Kate DiCamillo, okay? It's gonna be great.
Plus, toast features heavily in this book.
It'd make a marvelous read-aloud.

Great pick for a bridge between early reader and independent reader. Who doesn't love stories involving animals?

Sweet book, made my kid laugh. Definitely getting more.
The story begins with Mercy feeling afraid when she sleeps in her own bed and going to climb in bed with Mr. and Mrs. Watson. The bed begins to fall through the floor, and as Mercy hops away, they expect her to fetch help from the fire department. Being a very hungry pig, of course, she's off in search of a snack. Ideally, sugar cookies from the old lady next door. Shenanigans ensue, and the day is saved.

The kids loved Mercy Watson (especially because I felt that all of the characters needed some sort of southern accent)... the storyline was fine, the verbage was pretty good for younger readers, but the names (Eugenia specifically) were a little challenging for new chapter book readers. My two loved the storyline and the illustrations, tho!
**Reread with the younger kids and they love it, too!
