Wow, church trauma.

Main character leaves their hometown only to return basically a decade later after her ex-bf was killed. Who he was with and is being kept a secret. The pastor of the main church in town controls almost everyone. He preaches about being a noble wife. YUCK. Very 1950s, men do the work, women have babies, keep quiet, defer to their husbands.

MC decides to investigate the murder of her ex-bf on the way she uncovers just how ugly the town's pastor truly is and  how he continues to cover up his crimes - including murder the ex-bf, the asst. pastor, framing the ex-bf's wife for the murder of her husband, tries to kill the wife's sister and dad. He also killed his wife many years prior.

He tries to kill MC, but she is saved by her hometown love interest. It is later revealed that they killed the pastor so he can no longer control anyone - including the people of their hometown who blindly follow him, even tho so much damage is done right in front of their eyes.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. I was really pulled into the story and couldn’t wait to find out how it all unfolded. I found the twists a bit more predictable than the protagonist did, but that didn’t deter from my experience.

I feel like this book had the potential to be so much more interesting than it was. But the structure was very predictable and the way the different plots were threaded together was confusing in the beginning.
The big twist with Finn was supposed to feel really dramatic and like a *gasp* moment but because I didn’t really care for him from the beginning, it wasn’t shocking at all. And it just became really annoying. Especially because so much of the message of the book is about patriarchy and the selfishness of men, I think it was a little bit stupid of Del to re-start a relationship with him after knowing he worked with Rick.

Entertaining at times, cringey at times. Not really super suspenseful but some light twists along the way.

I recently delved into "Lay Your Body Down" by Amy Suiter Clarke, and I must say it left me with mixed feelings.
