Here are some of my notes in reverse order.

I'd also like to add that from what Mr. King wrote about his and Tabitha's relationship, I see them being a profound example of what a commitment, intuition, honesty, and collaboration can do. I hope I can find something like this for myself some day

Chapter 56 first draft: write as fast as you can while still being comfortable. Keep the first unfinished draft to yourself until done. Then share with a loved one if they promise not to tell you what they think until you're ready. During this time, take a break (write something different. Do something else. Live your life... minimum of 6 weeks. Preferably longer for longer works... your work should feel alien.)... screwups happen to the best of us... every novelist has an ideal writer, som1 they're writing the novel for.

Chapter 55 Story--> Theme. Theme is when you step away from the finished story and ask yourself why you wrote it. It's finding what "something" your story is about. Boredom can be an amazing thing for someone in a creative jam. Themes are no big deal. They're just interests. Questions from your experience as a human being that occupy your mind.

Chapter 54 basically summarizes the entire thing and then leads into characters, honesty, etc. And the most important thing which is feeling whether something is right for the story. If it works, fine! Symbolism (and patterns) also come in during the second draft (after the story)

Chapter 53. Character. Paying attention to people and then tell the truth. The best stories are character focused

Chapter 52. Dialogue. Show don't tell

CHAPTER 51 SUPER IMPORTANT (descriptions)! You want to give the reader just enough information for them to understand its relevance to the story. The description finishes in the reader's imagination... easier to over-describe than under

Writing is refined thinking

Fear is the root of most bad writing

Chp. 42 on writing by Stephen King: fuck passive verbs. Fuck adverbs

Stephen king: the writer's toolbox:
1 vocabulary
2 grammar
3 elements of style
Paragraph: Topic sentence --> support/evidence... in fiction, the paragraph is more like the beat (they'll form naturally)

On writing chapter 40 by Stephen King - the writer's toolbox. Don't make an effort to improve your vocab, that'll happen while reading. Simply say the first thing that comes to mind as long as it's appropriate and colorful. The first word is probably the best.

Chapter 39

Writing is telepathy (you have a sending place, and when you read, a receiving place)

Life isn't a support system for art. Art is the  support system for life

Write with the door closed. Rewrite with the door open.

When you write, you are telling yourself a story. When you rewrite, you are remove everything that is not the story

The last time I read a non-fiction book was for my 8th grade English class, so this was definitely out of the norm for me. I’m so happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The beginning is more of a memoir which I found really entertaining, and the rest is a kind of guide to the basics of writing and storytelling. As someone who currently has zero plans to write a novel of my own, I was surprised by how interested I was in the lessons King had to teach, as I think if anything, they’ll make me a more critical reader. This really makes me want to read more Stephen King! Shoutout to my Mom for picking this up for my birthday in Boston last year!

I am not a big fan of King's work and haven't really read a lot of him. However, I did enjoy this memoir. It was short but so helpful and has given me much needed motivation for my writing. All your questions about writing might not be answered in this novel but its a good start.

Great look at King's process and an enjoyable read all the way through.
