This is so difficult to review. Obviously plus points for it's setting in Berlin and me living here, too.
Besides that it's a great example of how running, especially long distance running, can be a form of self-harm. Plenty of ED behavior in this book.
But it has some really funny and relatable parts and even though the main protagonist is quite unlikeable and I don’t necessarily agree with her actions, I GET her in more aspects than I like to admit.

Daphne is so grotesquely unlikeable, over-privileged and under-grateful but also so human in her compulsions, fears, lies, and her intense impostor syndrome. The first half of the book took me awhile to get through but I sped through the second half. Difficult to articulate my feelings about this one but undoubtedly a unique start to my 2024 reading year :)

A dark portrayal of a young woman's short stint in Berlin. The city is described in rich detail, such that it feels like a character in the novel rather than just the setting.

I liked the writing, but I felt relieved when I finished the book. I kept reading only because of the descriptions of the Berlin atmosphere and the occasional German words.

I pulled out my keys and let myself into the courtyard of 105 HuberStraße, feeling as exhausted as Bilbo on his safe return to Bag End.

And thanks to Bea Setton, I decided to reread The Hobbit.

one of my favorite newer books. daphne’s best and worst qualities remind me so much of myself. setton’s footnotes add so much personality to the story as well. she interconnects symbols beautifully throughout the novel. LOVE!!!
