I thought I knew so much about this investigation that this might be boring, but it was really good. I loved hearing all the background from Paul and more about the genealogy aspect. Definitely worth the listen!

If you read I'll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara, have closely followed GSK, and/or are super into True Crime, I would super recommend this book. Includes interviews with surviving victims and family member of victims of EAR/GSK as well as the investigators that have worked the case for decades.

Really interesting to hear Paul Holes side of this investigation! Although my heart broke when Paul spoke of Michelle McNamara and her passing.

Fascinating follow up to Michelle McNamara's book.

#HOTFORHOLES! Even when you already know the story, the details, the obsessions ...... hearing the grueling and disturbing details of a journey that spanned decades straight from mouth of the incredible man who refused to give up the search for a real life monster is something that restores your faith in good people that will stop at nothing to close such a vile case and bring justice to countless victims and their families no matter how long it takes! Paul Holes and his relentless hunt for the Golden State Killer, along with every professional and armchair sleuth that had a hand in bringing this piece of absolute shit down, make my heart swoon with gratitude and respect.
Monsters are real. They walk among us every day. Fortunately, so do HEROES!
Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered

I really enjoyed this one, which isn’t surprising. I loved “Call Me God”, which also featured Jim Clemente as a narrator, and this didn’t disappoint as a follow up.

My only issue with this book was a strange chapter halfway through, narrated by a victims daughter. About 30-45 minutes of the 6.5 hour book is narrated by this woman, and details her backstory and life post her moms murder. It’s a very strange tangent and feels out of place. In fact, it’s such a departure from the rest of the book that it detracts enough to cause me to give this book a 4 star review instead of 5.

Golden state killerの事件の捜査の裏側が分かる。興味深くて早く聴き終えた。

i’m not a big audiobook person but this was very easy to listen to because it’s structured more like interviews and conversations than a genuine written narrative. i binge listened in two days sitting at work (which i might have to try and make a habit)

it was so immensely satisfying to see all the investigative pieces come together for the arrest. also so cool to see the advent of using genealogy in crime solving. & this worked really well as a sequel to i’ll be gone in the dark.

i thing i could do more true crime if it focused on the investigative process & victims like this

Gimme all the Golden State Killer updates!

So my friend Heather told me about this very telling audiobook 🎧that covers the forensics 🧫 collected throughout the Golden State Killer’s case (from 1976 to 1986) which ultimately led to the arrest of De Angelo last year. And I had to give it a listen!

What’s unique about this GSK story is it ends! For the past 40 years, there’s been no ending to the Golden State Killer case and most people thought he’d be another Zodiac or Jack the Ripper and would just get away without ever being held accountable. ⚖️But that changed on April 24, 2018.

This book outlines the journey that both forensic science 🔬and curious minds (Paul Holes) took to keep fighting for the truth. You learn a shit ton about DNA 🧬(I’m basically a scientist 👩🏻‍🔬now) and communicative advancements between departments/counties/states - like having CODIS!!

If this seems of interest to you, give it a listen. It’s heavy and horrific, but justice does prevail.

It makes perfect sense that Paul Holes would have written his version of events in the telling of this now rather famous story, but until I saw this "book" for sale on Audible I had no idea it existed. I say "book" because it's more like a podcast or series really, and is broken down into bitesized episodes. However, I loved every minute of it so please don't take this as a bad thing. It really wasn't in my eyes. I only mention it because I've seen other reviews where people were disappointed that they used one of their monthly Audible credits on what is essentially not a book. How anyone could be disappointed after listening to this is beyond me.

Not only is this written by Holes, it's narrated by him too. He's just such a cool dude. The way he talks about this case has you hooked in seconds. How he came to be on the case in the first place, which was already long cold by the time he took over, how much of his own time he dedicated to finding this guy, how important it became for him. It made me think of the line in Zodiac where Jake Gyllenhaal's Robert Graysmith says "I need to know who he is. I need to stand there, I need to look him in the eye and I need to know that it's him." This is how Paul Holes felt about the GSK. But unlike Graysmith, Holes actually got to do this, and not only this, he got to put the guy behind bars for the rest of his life.

If you have any interest in the Golden State Killer/East Area Rapist/Original Nightstalker/Vasalia Ransacker case, any at all, firstly I recommend you read or listen to I'll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara (because holy wow what a book), but then I recommend you listen to this. You won't regret it.
