This audiobook fulfilled all my needs to learn about how this cold case was solved and who the Golden State Killer was. From interviews with victims and family members to Paul Holes' 20+ year investigation, this was fascinating to hear/read. Plus, I learned so much about using genealogy to solve crimes! The takeaway: if you want more crimes and cold cases to be solved, submit your DNA test results to open-source DNA platforms!

Wow, if you think you know how this case was solved, you really have no idea. I have nothing but respect for all the investigators and other experts who were involved in investigating and eventually solving this crime. It was also wonderful to hear so much attention and care given to the victims and survivors. They are the true heros of this (and really all true crime) story, and it can be easy to gloss over who they are. An absolutely enlightening and brilliant look at a case that has haunted so many people for so long.
A sleek and well produced Podcast-style account of the decades long investigation into the GSK case. It was very moving to hear some victims speak of detective Carol Daly's work to support them through their traumatic experiences. Of particular interest to me were the latter episodes explaining how genetic genealogy in crime investigation work, and recounting the work of those genealogists who assisted Paul Holes' team in 2018, providing the break this case needed. A great supplementary work to the excellent I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara.
I know this is kind of weird but I am obsessed (OBSESSED) with the Golden State Killer story. Mostly because of the amazing work of the late Michelle McNamara which is detailed in her book, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, I think, and also I think because I find the audacity of the GSK absolutely terrifying - more than most true crime stories I have followed. The LA Times did a great podcast on the GSK called “The Stranger at the Window.” So I was of course going to listen to this audiobook that tells the story of the GSK investigation from the perspective of Paul Holes, the cold-case investigator who played a pivotal role in identifying the GSK. Highly recommend

It went into more depth about the investigation and the involvement of Paul Holes' criminology work. It also spent more time talking about Joseph DeAngelo and how he became a prime suspect through genealogy and DNA testing.
I really enjoyed hearing more about this case because I'll Be Gone in the Dark gave the details of the horrific crimes and Evil Has a Name gave the resolution that this case needed.
I really recommend this book to true crime lovers alike and anyone who read I'll Be Gone in the Dark and wants to hear more about this case!

I recently devoured I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara and absolutely loved it so when I came across this free podcast/audiobook on Audible, I was really excited to see the case from the perspective of the law enforcement and the victims. I thought this was a great follow up / companion to Michelle's book - this was a great listen.

This was a fascinating audiobook to listen to. Just the way it all unfolded over the decades and how DNA can solve cold cases. It is incredible.
I liked how we also got to hear from the survivors and the family members of the victims. We got to see how their lives were effected and how they survived such horrific atrocities.
And God bless the men and women who kept at it, didn't give up and solved the mystery so justice could be served.
5 out of 5 DNA Tests.
