This book entails a character whining about the same things 4 times over in a row. Like the premise, got annoyed at the execution.

I didn’t really vibe with this one for the first 3/4 of the book but continued because it’s a book club pick - I did really enjoy that final quarter while still mostly disliking the main character. Also the narrator for the audio book did a great job.

I watched the anime on Hulu first, so I was surprised to find the book takes a different structure and plot altogether! But I understand exactly how this book has persisted through the years. The narrator really captures the voice of the slovenly, undecided, plodding along teenage boy that I feel everyone sort of knows and turns him just charming enough to root for while keeping that voice intact. It’s an intensely delicate balance. I really enjoyed all four of the timelines with their silly, wacky hijinks all building to character development for our protagonist. And I love that with alt universe stories like this, usually that development is erased by the end but it isn’t here! Our protagonist really grows to appreciate his life and the people in it and food and the small things it all makes up. The romance with Akaashi is genuinely simple and sweet in not lingering too long, and the real heart here is Ozu of course! He is the perfect interpretation of sleezy but charming similarly to our protagonist and I love that the book ends on an affirmation of their love for each other. Silly and zany in just the way that I like, this was a really great comedy scifi with a hint of romance.

Oddly enough - I loved this book. This is NOT my typical read. I'm not really a "feel good" "good time" "funny time" boy. That being said, the protaganist reminded me SO much of my youngest brother I felt like it was he and I on this crazy multiverse journey of college life, clubs and the feeling of - Am I living enough?! How can I live better?! While simoultaniously disregarding all the amazing actually happening around you.
I want to quote Giani Washington from the Chicago Review of Books here - "The decision to leave the narrator without a name was wise as he is clearly a proxy (a term you will come across repeatedly in this book) for all of us. He discovers that it is never too late to live a better life, even if that life doesn’t look exactly the way you think it should. A combination of making the best of what is and keeping your eyes wide open for the next opportunity, however small, is Morimi’s simple, yet potent recipe for positive change. No matter your stage of life, it’s fool-proof."

I LOVE a good what if I did this story.
Outside of the absolute copy past repeated sections each path was so funny to read. The time loop was my favorite.
The main character is really a pathetic guy but it works so well. The concept of the library police is funny and the little parts the you would not think are connected they ARE
THE BEAR?! Where did it go and come from????
I’m really excited to read the second and try to find the mini prequel. And watch the anime’s that would be real trippy.
Good lessons to remember I might just be in the exact same situation so just try the best you can with your choices that you made
