I venture occasionally into the Young Adult genre, and this is the first in a series of ten (I think) Alex Rider Adventures; which I picked up because author Anthony Horowitz has just released an adult mystery, Magpie Murders. which I had on hold at library and some reviews had mentioned the Rider series as fun and fast and literate. So, while I was waiting, I thought I'd try it.

Truth? I finished it and put the second in the series on hold at the library. Long/short: Alex Rider's parents died when he was quite young, since which time he's been raised by his uncle, Ian Rider, who, rather than the 9 to 5 businessman he pretended to be, was a very adept, near Bond-ian spy. Alex is recruited (cajoled, blackmailed) into service by the same organization his uncle worked for and infiltrates the same corrupt group that murdered him.

A little unbelievable? Yes. But, right now, good conquering evil, the nice guys with morals winning out over the evil, power-hungry sociopaths, and a near guaranteed happy ending --- all wrapped up in a quick, not un-amusing afternoon of a read? SIGN ME UP.

Reread from middle school
It may be a teen boy spy fantasy, but it's my teen boy spy fantasy

These books were the highlight of my elementary school scholastic book fair experience, so I had high hopes :( I’m hoping the series picks up, because I’m committed to reliving the nostalgia. Also this is absoLUTELY deep state propaganda geared towards young readers

Great faced paced thriller for tweens. I would have no problem handing this to kids regularly - although some of the technology is already out of date even though this only came out 10 years ago.
Alex's uncle is suddenly killed and Alex can't believe it was an accident. His digging around results in him becoming MI6's youngest agent.

3.5. Stars

Took me 2hours to reread.

I love this series and I was in the mood to read exactly this book.

It’s fast paced, with lots of action.

Of course, I understand that I am not the age demographic for this book. When I first read this series, I was, and I would have rated it higher. Now, I thought the language used was a bit simple and could have done with an edit, but 14-year-old me did not care at all.
adventurous

My Rating Scale
* terrible
**mostly flawed but some good parts,
***satisfying book for the genre
****exceptional book but some flaws,
***** I LOVED it

My kids loved it. I didn't think it was great, kinda a slightly harder reading level version of spy school. Reminded me a little of Michael Vey but without the super powers
adventurous mysterious fast-paced

Fun little adventure for a teen audience. A little elementary for an adult.
