I wanted to watch the movie and thought I should read the book first at least. This is not as good as Horowitz adult novels but it's good to read where he honed his craft. I would probably have loved these more as a child but I still plan on reading the remaining books nevertheless.

Loved this book! I knew Anthony Horowitz from his TV writing and heard that he'd written a YA series about a kid spy.
Yes, there were parts that took a little of imagination, but I enjoyed Alex's adventures. I found him to be clever, ingenious, and stubborn. At times he was very much a 14 year old boy and other times he acted far beyond his age. But I couldn't wait to see how he got out of the situations he'd find himself in.
I look forward to reading more of Alex and his spy games.

One of the best young adult novels I have read this year. Some of the computer stuff does feel dated but this was written in 2000 so you just need to remind yourself of what it was like then. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Great middle grade thriller - interesting how in British thrillers the parents die whereas the USA ( see Theodore Boone ) parents still have a presence.
Some interesting themes - British supposed superiority but underlying racism and bullying - questions on loyalty to king and country
