The main character is not likable. It is a mix of sci-fi and horror where grief is actually the main character and not Thiango. Thiango, his mother in law, his step father in law are all in a complicated relationship in their grief. They need each other, but don't want each other for support, which is the real part of the book. Then there is the sci-fi and horror in there with a demon possessed Alexa (?). Weird plot driven book with addressing the need to honor and cope with our grief.

I really wanted to love this. The idea felt good but the execution felt forced

Gus Moreno’s a brilliant writer and I absolutely loved the prose, and commentary on grief and loss that this provided, and the plot.  Mostly.

There were a few bits in the middle where my interest began to wane a bit, and I think the ending could have been fleshed out a little bit better- but overall I’m really glad I read this, and I think it’s one I’ll probably come back to in time and get more out of

me when the unreliable narrator starts narrating unreliably: 😠

this started off so strong!! but it got more and more confusing with thiago’s slow descent into madness. pacing went out the window and the story jumped from one sub-genre of horror to the next (tech to paranormal to monsters to cosmic). basically pet sematary all over again, but with less structure on the ongoing curse/phenomenon. i loved it, don’t ask me what it’s about.

I had a really hard time finishing this book, if it was any longer I likely wouldn’t have. I was willing to look past the main character Thiago being so boring and insufferable because I thought this was going to be an entertaining tale of a haunted Alexa or Google Nest or what have you. That plot dropped off randomly about 30% through and then from there it just gets unnecessarily gory and nonsensical. :(
